Cala Violina

THE BEACH IN MAREMMA TOSCANA

Surrounded by luxuriant Mediterranean scrub, with very fine sand of quartz granules and crystal clear waters all year round. The beach can only be reached on foot, after leaving the car in the parking lot, through a path of about 20 minutes in the woods, or by sea, and perhaps it is precisely this “isolation” that has allowed this splendid Tuscan beach to be kept pure and uncontaminated . Cala Violina beach is located within the Bandite di Scarlino Nature Reserve, behind the beach is a dense Mediterranean scrub forest. The sand is clear, composed of grains of quartz, among the most particular in the world. The waters are clear and crystalline, and the view ranges from the green of the forest to the infinite blue of the sea… Cala Violina is a not very extensive beach, it is quiet and intimate, a small tropical oasis in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma. The beach is free, which means that there are no bathing establishments, only in the summer, you will find a small refreshment point where you can buy fresh drinks and sandwiches.

Curiosities about

Cala Violina

Cala Violina has a peculiarity that makes it famous, its name derives from the sound emitted by the grains of sand when they are trampled on… The sand of Cala Violina is unique in the whole area and very rare, in fact, if walked on, it emits a sound reminiscent of violin strings. This unique sand is composed of quartz grains which, when rubbed against each other such as when walking, generate a sweet sound very similar to that of a violin. It is an extremely rare phenomenon, determined by specific sand conditions, neither too rough nor too smooth… very few other beaches in the world can boast this feature, the most famous being Babadejuka in Brazil, Fort Dauphin in Madagascar, Gold Coast in Australia and Eigg Island in England.

The “Bandite di Scarlino” is a protected area of natural interest. It is a vast wooded area located between the hills and the sea, characterized by a rich Mediterranean vegetation and numerous naturalistic trails. The name “bandite” comes from the bands of bandits who, in the past, used to hide in this wooded area to escape justice.

Today, the Bandite di Scarlino is a protected area and a popular tourist attraction for visitors who love nature and outdoor activities. Trekking enthusiasts can choose from numerous trails that cross the area, while mountain biking enthusiasts can follow the many paths through the woods.

The Bandite di Scarlino also offer many opportunities for photography, birdwatching, and wildlife observation, with numerous species of birds, mammals, and reptiles that populate the area.

In addition, some of the most beautiful beaches in Tuscany, such as Cala Violina, Cala Martina, and the beach of Puntone, are located near the Bandite di Scarlino, offering the opportunity to relax in the sun and take a dip in the crystal-clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
